Highways England A49 Holmer Road, Newtown Road and Edgar Street resurfacing

An update from Highways England

I’m writing to inform you of some upcoming maintenance works on the A49, near Hereford. This work will be carried out by our contractor, Kier, on our behalf.

What we’re doing and why? What are the benefits?
We’ll be resurfacing the A49 along Holmer Road, Newtown Road and Edgar Street. The work has been identified following the deterioration of the carriageway. We’ll also be replacing the road markings and road studs. The completed work will provide a smoother surface and safer road, including clearer road markings.

When will this work take place?
We’ll work from 1 February 2021 to 24 February 2021. Our work will be carried out overnight when traffic counts are lower between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday. To reduce disruption to customers, the work will be delivered in phases as follows;

Phase 1- Monday 1 February to Tuesday 2 February (2 shifts), full carriageway closure of A49 Edgar Street between Prior Street and Newtown Road roundabout.
Phase 2- Wednesday 2 February to Monday 8 February (4 shifts), full carriageway closure of A49 Edgar Street between Prior Street and Newtown Road roundabout, including A49 Newtown Road.
Phase 3- Tuesday 9 February to Wednesday 10 February (2 shifts), full carriageway closure of A49 Newtown Road.
Phase 4- Thursday 11 February to Wednesday 17 February (5 shifts), full carriageway closure of A49 Newtown Road, and A49 Holmer Road between Priory Place roundabout and Halo Hereford Leisure Centre.
Phase 5- Thursday 18 February to Wednesday 24 February (5 shifts), full carriageway closure of A49 between Priory Place roundabout and Halo Hereford Leisure Centre.

What does this mean for you
Parking restrictions will apply whilst we carry out work to Holmer Road. We’ll need full access to the carriageway at this location throughout phase 4 and 5. An intercom system will be installed outside all properties with a driveway to maintain access/egress throughout. Please allow additional time for your journey. Access to and from frontages that fall directly within our closures will be facilitated with the use of escort vehicles. During closures, we’ll provide a fully signed diversion route. Emergency vehicles will have access throughout.

We’ll also be carrying out additional works in the surrounding area, reducing the need for us to return at a later date . There will be times when we have to extend our traffic management using lane closures to the southern half of Edgar Street and north of Starting Gate roundabout. If you’d like to be kept up to date with future works along the A49, please subscribe to our mailing list by emailing noreplyA49WMids@highwaysengland.co.uk.

I’d also like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption to those living close to the work. We’ll make every effort to carefully manage noise levels and additional lighting to minimise the impact. We’re following the latest government guidelines and will incorporate any new measures, including social distancing guidance, into our safe workplace planning. All our sites have strict safeguarding measures to prevent the spread of COVID19 and none of our sites are open to the public. All major construction projects are closely monitored, and the situation is kept under constant review
